Forte, so-called by its inhabitants and regulars, is a style - aside from being a town - from which tourism can't be left aside, but goes far beyond it. Holidays in Forte dei Marmi started in late Nineteenth Century, when noble Tuscan families started spending Summer months in the mild and salubrious climate, and the town became immediately cradle of élite and intellectual tourists. Personalities such as Ardengo Soffici, Eugenio Montale, Carlo Carrà, Henry Moore started to be regular guests of Forte dei Marmi's cafes, pine woods and beaches. In the Sixties, due to the Italian economic boom, Forte changed with the mood of the time, becoming a fashion and fun resort, but still preserving its unique and outstanding glamour and elegance. The beautiful villas built in its quiet and sheltered roads are still passed on through generation of upper-class families such as the Agnelli's. Nowadays 'Forte' continues to preserve its style and reputation. Property is valued at higher standards than anywhere else in Italy, but the town if never overdeveloped. Its antique mansions, its single floor villas, its secluded gardens, its understated center retain all the charm of the old days: nature, blue skies and sea, green woods, pastel coloured villas, the easiness of a lifestyle at an easy pace to be lived on foot or bicycle.
Forte dei Marmi is many things at once. It has an elegant city center and trendy clubs, tranquil beaches blessed by the superb view of the Apuan Alpes; it's home to common people and to celebrities who return every year, protected by the discretion of its inhabitants. Paradise for families thanks to its gently sloping beach, center of designer's boutiques and local craftsmanship (to be discovered in its renown Wednesday market), Forte dei Marmi is also congress center, and home to all-year round classy and sophisticated tourism.
