When Getty was installing the magnificent pool in the northern wing, he discovered the foundations of a Roman villa—thought perhaps to be the weekend retreat of Julius Caesar. Getty, who was profoundly interested in archaeology, spared no expense to preserve this antiquity. These Roman ruins are now encompassed by the lower level of the home and guests can view the splendid mosaic floors, walls, and pottery—displayed as if in a living museum.
