General

A fantastic tower dated back to 1400, one of the most important historical buildings in Umbria, set in a magical place, close to a small town located in an Apennine valley at the confluence between Fosso del Colle and Fosso della Valle di Collelungo. Inside the fortress there are remains of other structures, including a guard tower and a chapel. The whole complex is dominated by an impressive pentagonal stone tower Guelph battlemented for 32 meters of height.

The complex consists of two main buildings connected to each other by a large terrace. Arriving by car, parking at the back of the tower, you get inside the court thanks to an opening in the wall that leads the guest on a central path that gives the chance to reach the church, the garrison and through stairs connected to it, the terrace which gives access to the tower.

The church thanks to the restoration got back to its original appearance seconding artificial plaster walls, which brought to light, in addition to the wonderful vaults with selected ashlars, also part of a fourteenth-century crucifixion under restoration.

The garrison consists of two levels connected by an internal staircase connecting: the ground floor, with room for disabled guests accessible by a branch of the central path can be covered without architectural barriers and the first floor which houses the kitchen.

The room, characterized by high ceiling with wooden beams, is decorated with antique bench parade, decorated with typical plants of the Baroque period, with a cabinet / wardrobe made of walnut and very thick oak. The bathroom, covered with old tiles of late eighteenth century has all the comforts and responds to the needs of the disabled.

All rooms are equipped with autonomous heating and cooling for the independent management by the host to get the favorite temperature thanks to under floor heating and fan convectors, shower stalls are relaxing with a pressurization of the groups that emit hot or cold water under high pressure, plasma TVs and all are equipped with both a pay per view and free channels, mattresses are all orthopedic while sheets and towels are of high quality; Internet access is free, thanks to wireless controllers.

The kitchen can play in wintertime, the function of a dining room, thanks to its large size, with its collections of kitchen utensils in copper and ceramics, displayed on the walls which create a warm atmosphere. Getting out the kitchen, you enter the terrace with terracotta jars, chairs and tables for external use, useful to enjoy the cool of the typical summer in the evening and can be used as a solarium during the day.

From a wooden staircase, you enter the door of the tower that for the past defensive purposes it is very small and has been made of finely carved stone blocks which highlight the period of construction. The environment that you access is dominated by the huge fireplace flanked left and right by a couple of church benches of late ‘600. From this room, a wooden staircase leads to a relax room with Internet Point, TV, telephone, stereo, furnished with sofas and chairs suitable for reading, relax and be together, considering the large number of seats. Going up to the fourth floor you enter the first bedroom of the tower, equipped with all amenities mentioned above, characterized by sober furniture of late ‘700. Going up to the fifth floor, you enter the second bedroom, very similar to the first for sizes and furniture differentiated primarily by roof slab, in this case with a barrel vault of brick and stone, while of wooden beams in the other.

Going up to the sixth floor you enter the third bedroom, housed in what was the recovery room from the bad weather for the soldiers on guard in the tower. Although of modest size, in height and extension, it has a special charm as a result of the access to the walkway external terrace Guelph battlemented, which offers unsurpassed views of the castle and the valley.

The History Journey to the past

One of the first documents in which we talk of the town is a scroll of 5 January 1229 in which Rinaldo, Cardinal of Sant ‘Eustachio and Camerlengo of Holy Roman Church, delegated Alberigo, a judge of Topino valley, to gather the information needed for a case between the Chapter of the Assisi Church and two gentlemen of the county for the possession of the Serra di Valtopina castle: Napoleon from d’Armezzano and Bernardo from Capodacqua. The resort, in which certainly existed a fortified area, it is also named in the Chronicle of Perugia as it relates that on 13 May 1289, troops from Perugia and Todi, devastated the castles of Foligno, including Colfiorito Capralita and Capodacqua. The current fortress was built by Ugolino III (XVI) Trinci in 1387 on a small hill surrounded by cypress trees near a lush river, to protect the diverticulum to Colfiorito considered of vital strategic importance. This impressive defensive building, on June 18, 1413 was badly damaged by the troops of Ladislas d’Anjou, King of Naples: the monarch wanted to take revenge on Ugolino as he was at the service of Florence and had defeated his soldiers.

From 1445 became the summer residence of the Curia of Foligno, in 1450 there lived Bishop Antonio Bolognini (Appointed Bishop of Foligno in 1444 till 1461) he ordered the construction of the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Rasiglia. In 1573 the fortress and the village counted thirty-two families. The fortress was later, a possession of the Gentili Spinola family that counted among its members, Antonio and his brother John Baptist as members of the Papal Mint in Foligno in 1794-96.

A horseshoe form structure, following the trend of the hill on which top stands the tall pentagonal tower Guelph embattled. Only few remains of the wall are left, despite the judges of Foligno had repeatedly made reinforce works on it starting from the sixteenth century.
